Allied Gold’s Sadiola Mine required an urgent runway upgrade as the existing surface had deteriorated, posing serious safety risks for aircraft operations. The key challenges included:

  •  Water pooling on the surface after rain, creating a hydroplaning hazard and potential loss of control during landing and taxiing
  •  Loose gravel and debris, risking engine and propeller damage from foreign object debris (FOD)
  •  Reduced aircraft performance, as pilots had to activate anti-icing systems, limiting takeoff weight and efficiency

The Solution: EBS Surface Seal Application
After conducting a comprehensive site inspection, Soil Solutions recommended earthworks preparation followed by an EBS Surface Seal to:

Stabilize and seal the runway surface for all-weather usability
Eliminate loose gravel to prevent aircraft damage
Improve drainage to eliminate standing water hazards
Enhance skid resistance, reducing risks during takeoff and landing
Allow for heavier aircraft landings, increasing operational efficiency

Implementation & Long-Term Benefits
Earthworks are being conducted under the remote supervision of Soil Solutions technical experts, ensuring proper preparation before EBS application. Once completed, the Sadiola Mine runway will provide:

  Safe, dust-free operations year-round
Extended aircraft lifespan & reduced maintenance costs
Lower environmental impact & reduced need for future grading

This upgrade will ensure reliable aviation operations for personnel and cargo transport, supporting safe and efficient mining logistics.
