Sissingué Mine Airstrip: A Durable & Weather-Resistant Solution
Located 787km northwest of Abidjan, near the Mali border, the Sissingué Mine required a durable, all-weather airstrip to support its operations. In November 2016, Perseus Mining contacted Soil Solutions to provide a long-term stabilization and dust control solution for their newly constructed runway.
Challenges & Solution
Heavy rains posed a risk of surface degradation, leading to potential safety hazards and increased maintenance costs. Soil Solutions conducted an on-site inspection in March 2017 and provided technical guidance for the EBS Surface Seal application.
Preparation Process:
- Scarifying the surface to a depth of 150mm
- Blending imported sand with in-situ material for an even, compactable mix
- Removing debris & oversize material
- Shaping & leveling the surface for proper drainage
- Applying multiple coats of EBS Soil Stabilizer until full penetration was achieved
Results:
✓ A High-Performance, All-Weather Runway
✓ Sealed & protected from erosion, fine material loss & dust generation
✓ Significantly improved safety & visibility for pilots and ground crews
✓ Enhanced aircraft acceleration & skid resistance for safer landings & takeoffs
✓ Reduced aircraft & airstrip maintenance costs
✓ Year-round usability, even in extreme weather conditions
The Sissingué Mine airstrip now operates at optimal efficiency, ensuring safer, more cost-effective transport for mining operations while minimizing environmental impact.
