Surama Airstrip Upgrade: A Sustainable Gateway to Eco-Tourism in Guyana
Nestled in the heart of Guyana, the Surama Airstrip sits within a savannah landscape, surrounded by wetlands, forests, rivers, and the Pakaraima Mountains. It shares a border with the Iwokrama International Centre for Conservation and Development along the Burro-Burro River, making it a critical access point for eco-tourism and conservation efforts.
Project Overview: Enhancing Accessibility & Sustainability
To boost tourism and improve regional connectivity, the Guyana Government partnered with JR Ranch Inc. to develop a long-term airstrip upgrade solution. The Surama Airstrip was selected as the first for extension and enhancement, with Soil Solutions providing:
- Technical Assistance & Guidance
- Engineered Base Stabilizer (EBS) for Surface Protection
- Dust Suppression & Erosion Control
Airstrip Preparation & EBS Surface Seal Application
Under Soil Solutions’ guidance, JR Ranch completed all preparation work, including:
✓ Inspection, final shaping, and leveling of the airstrip
✓ Assembly of water trucks and pumps
✓ Compaction of the surface for a smooth, even finish
Using three custom-built water tankers, the EBS Surface Seal was applied in multiple coats, creating a sealed, weather-resistant surface that:
- Eliminates dust, improving visibility and safety
- Prevents erosion, cracking, and material loss
- Enhances aircraft acceleration and skid resistance
- Reduces aircraft maintenance costs by preventing surface damage
- Ensures year-round usability in all weather conditions

The Surama Airstrip Upgrade, completed in partnership with JR Ranch and Soil Solutions, is a landmark achievement in promoting eco-tourism in Guyana’s Amazon region.
